I have been an employee of the Concord Police Department for over 22 years. When I was first hired, I had the opportunity to drive a 1978 Dodge Monaco and that was when the obsession started. Fifteen years ago I had a vision of buying and restoring a retired police car after seeing other departments do the same with older model vehicles.
The vehicle of choice was simple: a 1978 Dodge Monaco 440, the very same patrol vehicle used by the City of Concord from 1977 to 1986. It has taken me over 11 years to locate this vehicle. In April of this year James Sousa located a rather rough example, a retired Sonoma County Sheriff's patrol vehicle.
In pursuit of my vision I am writing this letter seeking assistance, either monetary, material, or through assistance in completing the project from local businesses. This vehicle is all original, right down to the non-running 440 Police Interceptor motor and rusted quarter panels.
My intentions are to restore this vehicle to its former glory that the Concord Police Department once used. I have received approval from the City of Concord Police Department to start this project since it will include the use of police markings and emergency equipment. It is my responsibility to purchase, insure, and maintain the vehicle.
I envision this vehicle being used as a community outreach instrument during special city events such as during the July 4th city parade, city events, demonstrations, CPOA golf tournaments, Top the Cops at Infineon Raceway, police car shows, and other events where this vehicle would be beneficial and foster good will in the community.
Your contributions will be recognized and advertised every time this vehicle is used for a special event through the use of a contributors' display board and advertising. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter.
Sincerely,
Paul Duckart
